About

University of Calicut

University of Calicut is the largest University in Kerala. Established in the year 1968, it is re-accredited by NAAC with A+ Grade. The University aims to nurture excellence in education and research in its catchment areas of Northern Kerala, historically consigned to the periphery of Kerala’s academic map. The University lays its emphasis on fostering quality human resource and promoting productive research that benefit both local communities and wider humanity. The University was created through a Government plan bifurcating Kerala University. As per the plan, the four post-graduate departments of the University of Kerala operating in Calicut were annexed to the new University along with fifty four constituent colleges spread across seven northern districts. With ‘Nirmaya Karmana Sree’ as its motto, the University has been able to surmount all challenges and emerge as the largest residential cum affiliating University in Kerala. With 36 post graduate departments and 406 colleges it has become a beacon of hope and enlightenment for hundreds of thousands of young men and women in North Kerala.

Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics (CIDA) Lab,
Department of Computer Science, University of Calicut.

Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics are active areas of current research for their potential application to many real-life problems. Computational intelligence is a set of nature-inspired computational methodologies and approaches to address complex real-world problems to which traditional mathematical/statistical modeling could not perform substantially for a few reasons: the processes might be too complex for mathematical reasoning, it might contain some uncertainties during the process, or the process might simply be non-deterministic in nature. Computational intelligence has now emerged as a powerful tool for information processing, decision making, and knowledge management, and underpins significant technological milestones. Recently, data generation at huge scales from various sources like streaming data, social media content, electronic medical records, genomic and proteomic studies, and similar areas forms a data deluge that is hard to manage using traditional database technologies. Data analytics (DA) is the process of examining data sets in order to draw conclusions about the information they contain, increasingly with the aid of specialized systems and software. Data analytics technologies and techniques are widely used in commercial industries to enable organizations to make more-informed business decisions and by scientists and researchers to verify or disprove scientific models, theories and hypotheses.

The CIDA lab has been instituted in the Department of Computer Science with the aim of conducting studies and research in the frontier areas computational intelligence and data analytics with the special emphasis on affective computing and fake news detection, and other socially relevant disciplinary directions. The department of computer science, University of Calicut actively involved in the collaborative research work with the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Queen's University Belfast, UK and promising research outcomes derived out of this research has been published in reputed journals, book chapters and international conference proceedings. A web portal has already been developed as part of the Break the Fake project undertaken by the CIDA Lab for the purpose of curated data set creation (URL: https://dcs.uoc.ac.in/cida/break-the-fake/ ) for the research purpose. This portal allows users to upload both in English and Malayalam fake news into the system. Along with textual content of the fake news, the system provides options to upload images and other content associated with the fake news. The dataset is being curated for the conduct of experiments in order to develop a reliable automatic fake news detection for Malayalam.

About the Conference

Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics are active areas of current research for their potential application to many real-life problems. Computational intelligence is a set of nature-inspired computational methodologies and approaches to address complex real-world problems to which mathematical or traditional modeling can be useless for a few reasons: the processes might be too complex for mathematical reasoning, it might contain some uncertainties during the process, or the process might simply be stochastic in nature. Computational intelligence has now emerged as a powerful tool for information processing, decision making, and knowledge management and has been successfully developed in areas such as neural networks, fuzzy systems, evolutionary algorithms, bio-medicine.

The Second National Conference on Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics (CIDA 2023) is intended to provide a forum for academicians, industrial experts and researchers to report their recent research outcomes and exchange knowledge in the field of Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics. The goal of the conference is to bring together academicians, industrial professionals and researchers to exchange and share their experience in all aspects of Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics. It also provides a premier interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners, and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions adopted in the fields of Computational Intelligence and Data Analytics.
